Who do you follow..?

A few weeks ago a man described as “a visionary”, “a creative genius” and “an amazing human being” died. Aged just 56, Steve Jobs, the founder and CEO of Apple, sadly lost his long fight with cancer. He had led the company, helped launch some iconic pieces of technology, and gained a huge following throughout the world. However, Steve Jobs was different to many celebrities, he was immensely private, giving away little about his home life. What a stark contrast with the ‘cult’ of celebrity that has swept throughout the world, where people crave to be famous and loved by the masses. Reality TV has spawned many celebrity hopefuls, grasping at the opportunity of fame and fortune. Newsagent’s shelves are full of magazines obsessed with telling (or making up!) stories of so-called celebrities. You can even follow celebrities on Twitter, receiving updates on everything they are doing in their day!

But where does this obsession get us in life? Many celebrities are here one week and forgotten the next; their 15 minutes of fame are soon over!

There is of course one person whose is still known 2000 years after his death. He didn’t seek to be rich or famous, but simply came to give a lasting message that would be consistent even today. He didn’t come to promote himself but tell people about what his father is offering the world. In fact, when he was on earth so many people hated him, they eventually had him killed. Jesus really is the opposite of most modern celebrities; a man who came to save rather than to self-publicise.

So whether you are an avid Apple Mac enthusiast, a celebrity twitter follower, or possibly neither, why not invest some time in following someone who can really make a difference to your life? There really is nothing to lose... and everything to gain.  Follow someone new today.

Useful passage to look up: John 8 v12. “Jesus said, “I am the light of the world. He who follows me shall not walk in darkness, but have the light of life.”
