November 2009 Editorial

Title – Children In Need

Friday 20th November will be the 2009 Children in Need appeal.  In 2008 the British public donated over £37million to help disadvantaged children.  People are encouraged to do an array of different things, from a simple cake bake or ‘count the beans’ competition, to more wacky and extravagant methods of raising funds.  The appeal is lots of fun with the TV show lasting for several hours.

Every day in the UK many children are disadvantaged through abuse, neglect, deprivation, illness and disability.  In 2000 nearly 400,000 children in England were deemed to be “children in need” – over 50% of these had been abused or neglected.  Helping these vulnerable young people costs social services £41million per week.  This puts the TV appeal into perspective, showing just how much help these children need.

On 20th November you may donate money, be involved in a car wash or some marathon activity.  You may help through mentoring, being a “big brother/sister”, fostering or adopting, or simply give time to care.  Enjoy the fun of Children in Need appeal this autumn but also please give generously - even in a country as advanced and affluent as the UK, there are still many children in need.

Ironically, in God’s eyes, we are all ‘children in need’.  We all need God’s love and guidance, so much so that he gave his son, Jesus, to save us.  Pick up the Bible today to see how God has promised to help and care for your future.

Useful passage:  "For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him.”  John 3 vs 16-17.
